In the 1990’s, Crow Native Days was initiated
by Carl Venne as an event to entertain the youth during the
Nomee Administration. He was assigned a project by The Crow
Tribe for ways to combat Drug and Alcohol abuse by youth and
adults. Thus bringing to life Crow Native Days. This event
incorporated some events that were started in the 1990’s as
well, such as the Ultimate Warrior Challenge. Today this
grueling race is also offered to females, comprising of three
members. The three members have a specialty in this three part
race, canoeing, running and relay horse race. The Warriors have
to compete in all of these races, very similar to the decathlon
of the Olympics. The difference is the race starts and ends the
same day. There are also other events that take place during
Native Days such as: Basketball Games for the youth, a Rodeo,
Horse races, Indian Relay, Pow-wow, Parade, a program honoring
Veterans and a anti-meth Trail Ride.
The Battle of the Little Big Horn takes place daily starting
Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Real Bird Ranch located right
at the historic Medicine Tail coulee where the battle actually
took place. Crow Native Days takes place right in Crow Agency,
Montana, the heart of Crow Country. This is an event that
instills pride in Crow culture and historical value. The dates
of this colorful event corresponds with the anniversary of the
infamous Battle of the Little Big Horn. Crow Country is home to
many historical sites and scenic country.
